AEO vs SEO
SEO aims to rank pages in search results and earn clicks; AEO (answer engine optimization) aims to have your content used, mentioned or cited inside answers from AI engines and answer features. They share the same foundation: for Google, a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible either way. The main differences are the unit of visibility and how you measure it.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rankings and clicks from results pages | Inclusion, mention or citation in an answer |
| Unit | Position, impression, click | Citation, brand mention, share of answers |
| Measurement | Search Console, rank trackers | Search Console’s Generative AI report,[1] Bing AI Performance,[2] prompt tracking |
| Crawlers | Googlebot, Bingbot | Also OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot[3][4][5] |
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are “rooted in” its core ranking systems[6] and that SEO best practices “remain relevant.”[7] Google even lists AEO/GEO as a service an SEO might offer.[8]
Why does the difference matter for traffic?
Pew Research Center found (March 2025 data) that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared versus 15% without one.[9] Visibility in the answer can rise while clicks fall, so AEO needs its own metrics; see measuring search visibility.
Where do AEO and GEO fit?
AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably; GEO comes from a 2023 paper.[10] For a three-way comparison see AEO vs GEO vs SEO.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO just SEO?
The foundations overlap heavily, but the goal (being in the answer) and the metrics differ.
Which should I prioritize?
For Google, the same work serves both. Add AEO-specific steps where they differ: crawler access for other engines and citation tracking.
What is AIO vs AEO?
“AIO” is used loosely for AI optimization or AI Overviews. AEO refers to optimizing for answer engines generally.
