LLM visibility

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

LLM visibility is how often large language model products (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI features) mention, cite or recommend a brand or website when answering prompts. Because answers vary by prompt, model, location and time, it is measured statistically: run a fixed prompt set repeatedly and count how often you appear.

Why is LLM visibility probabilistic?

Generative answers are sampled, not fixed. The original GEO experiments sampled five responses per query at temperature 0.7 “to reduce statistical deviations.”[1] C-SEO Bench found that when a change did alter a document’s citation rank, shifts were “both positive and negative” and partly cancelled out, giving averages near zero with high variance.[2] A single manual check is therefore an anecdote, not a measurement.

How do you measure LLM visibility?

  1. Define a prompt set that reflects real buyer questions (branded and unbranded).
  2. Choose engines and locations.
  3. Run prompts on a schedule and record mentions, citations, position and sentiment.
  4. Report rates (e.g. share of prompts where you are mentioned) and share of voice against competitors.

Tools that do this include Peec AI, Profound, OtterlyAI, Semrush, SE Ranking and Ahrefs Brand Radar; see AI visibility tools. Ahrefs says Brand Radar’s index prompts are modeled from real searches in its keyword database.[3]

How accurate are LLM citations?

Not fully. A Stanford human evaluation of Bing Chat, NeevaAI, perplexity.ai and YouChat (responses collected February–March 2023) found that on average only 51.5% of generated sentences were fully supported by their citations, and 74.5% of citations supported their associated sentence.[4] Being cited does not guarantee being represented accurately, so review the answer text, not just the link.

What influences LLM visibility?

Frequently asked questions

How many prompts should I track?

Enough to cover your main topics and buyer stages with repetition. Vendor plans range from about 25 prompts upward; Semrush lists 25 on its AI Visibility Toolkit.

Is LLM visibility the same as AI visibility?

They are near-synonyms. LLM visibility emphasizes the model; AI visibility is the broader marketing term.

Why does ChatGPT give me a different answer than my tracking tool?

Answers vary with memory, location, model version and sampling. Tools aim for neutral, repeated sampling, so compare trends rather than single answers.
