AI referral traffic
AI referral traffic is visits from AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so those visits are easy to segment. For others, filter by referrer domain. Many AI interactions send no click at all, so referrals understate AI visibility.
How do you identify AI referrals?
OpenAI says ChatGPT includes utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs.[1] Build an analytics segment for referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com.
What about Google AI Overviews?
Google counts clicks from AI features in Search Console Performance data and reports them in the Generative AI report.[2]
Why is AI referral data incomplete?
Pew found users clicked a link inside an AI summary in only 1% of visits.[3] Some apps strip referrers. Pair referrals with mention tracking.
