Gemini visibility
Gemini is Google’s family of AI models and the Gemini apps built on them. Visibility in Gemini app answers is controlled differently from Google Search: the Google-Extended robots.txt token governs whether Google may use crawled content to train Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, while it “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search.”
What does Google-Extended control?
Per Google, Google-Extended is a standalone product token for managing whether crawled content “may be used for training future generations of Gemini models that power Gemini Apps and Vertex AI API for Gemini and for grounding (providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time…) in Gemini Apps and Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI.” It has no separate user-agent string and is not a Search ranking signal.[1]
How is Gemini related to AI Overviews and AI Mode?
Google’s Search AI features run on Gemini-family models: Google said a custom version of Gemini 2.0 powered AI Mode at its March 2025 launch.[2] But AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search and are governed by Googlebot and snippet controls, not Google-Extended.[3]
How do you track Gemini visibility?
Google offers no Gemini-app performance report for site owners. Tools covering Gemini include Semrush,[4] SE Ranking,[5] Peec AI (a Gemini visibility tracker),[6] OtterlyAI,[7] Profound[8] and Ahrefs Brand Radar.[9]
Frequently asked questions
If I block Google-Extended, do I lose Google rankings?
No. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal.
Does Gemini cite sources?
Gemini apps can ground answers in Google Search content; the Google-Extended documentation describes grounding in Gemini Apps.
Is AI Mode the same as Gemini?
No. AI Mode is a Google Search experience that uses a custom Gemini model; the Gemini app is a separate product.
