GEO strategy
A GEO strategy is a plan for earning mentions and citations in AI-generated answers. A defensible one has five parts: pick the questions that matter (a fixed prompt set), make sure engines can access and index you, publish citable pages, build third-party mentions, and measure. It should lean on documented requirements and treat single-study tactics as experiments.
What are the steps in a GEO strategy?
- Define prompts and engines. List the questions buyers ask and the engines that matter (Google AI features, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini).
- Baseline. Record current citations and mentions; see AI citation tracking.
- Access. Allow search crawlers: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search,[1] PerplexityBot,[2] Claude-SearchBot;[3] keep pages indexed and snippet-eligible for Google.[4]
- Content. Answer directly, add original data and cite sources; see content optimization for AI.
- Entities and mentions. Consistent entity data and earned coverage; see entity SEO and digital PR.
- Measure and iterate on the same prompt set.
Which GEO tactics have evidence?
The 2023 GEO paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved source visibility by up to 40% in its benchmark.[5] The 2025 C-SEO Bench found most such content-rewriting methods ineffective, with the authors reporting only three of 54 cases significant.[6] Off-site signals have correlational support: branded web mentions correlated most strongly with AI Overview brand visibility in a 75,000-brand study.[7] See GEO replications.
What should a GEO strategy avoid?
Google’s spam policies include attempts “to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search,”[8] and its guide warns against creating pages for every fan-out variation.[9]
How is a GEO strategy different from an AEO strategy?
Mostly in name. See AEO strategy and AEO vs GEO.
Frequently asked questions
How long until a GEO strategy shows results?
No engine publishes timelines. Crawler changes can apply within about a day for ChatGPT search; content and reputation changes take longer.
How many prompts should I track?
Enough to cover your main topics and buyer stages, kept fixed so trends are comparable. No standard number exists.
Is GEO strategy separate from SEO strategy?
For Google, it builds on the same foundation. Run it as an extension of SEO with extra measurement.
