Google-Extended

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

Google-Extended is a robots.txt product token that controls whether content Google crawls may be used to train future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. It has no separate user agent, and Google says it “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal.” It does not opt you out of AI Overviews.

What does Google-Extended control?

Use for training future Gemini models and for grounding in Gemini Apps and Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI. Crawling uses existing Google user agents; the token is only a control.[1]

Does it affect AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode are Search features; controls are snippet rules and noindex.[2]

How do you use it?

User-agent: Google-Extended
Disallow: /

See robots.txt for AI crawlers.
