AI visibility
AI visibility is how often, and how favorably, a brand, product or website appears in answers generated by AI systems: named in the text (a mention), linked as a source (a citation), or recommended. It is measured by first-party reports from Google and Microsoft, and by third-party tools that run sets of prompts through engines and count mentions and citations.
What counts as AI visibility?
- Mention: the brand name appears in the answer text.
- Citation: a URL from your site is shown as a source.
- Recommendation or position: where you appear in a list the model produces.
- Sentiment and accuracy: whether the description is correct and favorable.
Vendors define these differently. Ahrefs Brand Radar, for example, reports Mentions (“how often your brand name appears in AI answer text”), Citations (“how often AI links to your pages or domains as a source”) and AI Share of Voice.[1] SE Ranking separates brand mentions from “linked mentions.”[2]
How is AI visibility different from AI search visibility?
“AI visibility” is the broader brand-level idea, including chat answers produced with or without live web search. AI search visibility usually means appearances in search-grounded experiences such as AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, where citations to URLs are possible. LLM visibility stresses the model itself.
Where does AI visibility data come from?
| Source | Covers | Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console Generative AI performance report | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode | Impressions by page, country, device, date[3] |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (preview) | Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing, select partners | Citations, cited pages, grounding queries[4] |
| Prompt-tracking tools | Varies by vendor | Mentions, citations, share of voice on your prompt set |
| Prompt databases / APIs | e.g. DataForSEO LLM Mentions (AI Overviews and ChatGPT) | Mention counts, top cited domains and pages[5] |
Why do AI visibility numbers differ between tools?
Each tool uses its own prompt set, engines, locations and sampling schedule. Semrush says its toolkit’s prompt responses “are captured from real requests and not via any APIs of LLMs.”[6] OtterlyAI notes that manual checks may differ from its results because engines personalize answers using memory and location.[7] Compare trends within one tool, not absolute numbers across tools.
How do you improve AI visibility?
The evidence-backed levers are the same as for GEO: crawl access, strong retrieval (SEO), clear and original content, and authentic brand mentions elsewhere. In Ahrefs’ 2025 study of 75,000 brands, brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions versus 14 for the next quartile.[8]
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI visibility score?
A vendor metric. Semrush’s AI Visibility Score (0–100) compares how often your brand is mentioned with the median of automatically identified competitors. Other tools calculate scores differently.
Can I see AI visibility in Google Analytics?
Analytics shows visits, not visibility. Visits from AI engines can appear as referrals, but impressions and mentions need Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools or a tracking tool.
Is AI visibility the same in every country?
No. Answers vary by location and language; most tools let you set markets, and Search Console reports AI feature impressions by country.
