AI SEO

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

AI SEO is used for two different things: (1) SEO for AI search, which means optimizing so that AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity mention or cite you (also called GEO, AEO or LLM SEO); and (2) AI-assisted SEO, which means using AI tools to do SEO work. This wiki uses the first meaning unless stated.

What is SEO for AI search called?

Several names are in use. Generative engine optimization (GEO) comes from a 2023 research paper that defined it as helping content creators “improve their content visibility in generative engine responses.”[1] Answer engine optimization (AEO) and LLM SEO are practitioner terms. Google itself lists “optimizing for generative AI” among the services an SEO may offer, and refers to “AEO” and “GEO” services by name.[2]

Is AI SEO different from traditional SEO?

For Google, the foundation is the same: “the best practices for SEO remain relevant” for AI features, and there are no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible.[3] Differences show up elsewhere: other engines use their own crawlers ([4][5][6]), and measurement moves from rankings to citations and mentions.

What does AI-assisted SEO mean, and what are its limits?

AI-assisted SEO means using language models for research, drafting or analysis. Google’s spam policies treat “using generative AI tools or other similar tools to generate many pages without adding value for users” as scaled content abuse.[7] Google also notes that third-party SEO tools “don’t have access to Google’s internal ranking data.”[2]

Does the research support AI SEO tactics?

Partly. The GEO paper reported visibility gains of up to 40% from tactics like adding citations and statistics in its benchmark.[1] A 2025 benchmark, C-SEO Bench, found most such methods ineffective; the authors report only three of 54 cases significant.[8] See GEO replications.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI SEO the same as GEO?

When people mean SEO for AI search, yes, the terms overlap. When they mean using AI tools for SEO, no.

Can AI write my SEO content?

Google does not ban AI-assisted content, but mass-producing pages without adding value for users violates its scaled content abuse policy.

Does Google endorse AI SEO tools?

No. Google says it doesn’t evaluate or endorse third-party SEO tools.
