How to rank in AI Overviews
To appear in AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet; Google says “there are no additional technical requirements.” Beyond that, Google’s advice is standard SEO: helpful, people-first content, crawlable pages, and structured data that matches visible text. No special files or schema are needed.
What are the requirements for AI Overviews?
“To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.”[1] Google’s newer guide adds that a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console.[2]
What does Google recommend?
- SEO fundamentals “remain relevant.”[1]
- Content that provides “original information, reporting, research, or analysis.”[3]
- Structured data that matches the visible text.[1]
- Up-to-date Merchant Center and Business Profile information.[1]
What is not required?
Google: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.”[1] See llms.txt.
Why don’t AI Overviews show for my query?
Google says AI Overviews “are only shown when our systems determine that it is additive to classic Search, and as such, often don’t trigger.”[1] See AI Overviews not showing.
How do you measure AI Overview visibility?
Use Search Console’s Generative AI performance report,[4] and see AI Overview tracking.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an AI Overview ranking factor?
Google documents no separate ranking factors; AI features are rooted in core Search ranking and quality systems.
Do featured snippets help with AI Overviews?
Both need snippet eligibility; we found no documented direct link beyond that.
How do I opt out of AI Overviews?
Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex; these also affect classic snippets.
