AI search visibility
AI search visibility is how often your pages are shown as sources, and your brand is named, in AI-generated answers inside search products: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. It is the AI-era counterpart of search visibility and can be measured with Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools and third-party trackers.
Which AI search surfaces matter?
| Surface | Launched | Index / crawler |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | US rollout May 14, 2024[1] | Google Search index; Googlebot[2] |
| Google AI Mode | Labs March 5, 2025; all US users from May 20, 2025[3][4] | Google Search index; Googlebot |
| ChatGPT search | October 31, 2024[5] | OAI-SearchBot for inclusion[6] |
| Perplexity | — | PerplexityBot[7] |
| Microsoft Copilot / Bing | — | Bing; reported in Bing AI Performance[8] |
How is AI search visibility counted in Search Console?
AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the Performance report under the “Web” search type.[2] Search Console Help sets the rules: a click on an external link in either feature counts as a click; for AI Overviews, the link “must be scrolled or expanded into view” to count as an impression, and all links in an AI Overview share one position; in AI Mode, position follows standard results rules and each follow-up question is a new query.[9] The separate Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites as of August 31, 2026, shows AI-feature impressions by page, country, device and date.[10]
How is it counted in Bing?
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report (public preview, announced February 2026) shows total citations, average cited pages, page-level citation activity and grounding queries across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and select partner integrations.[11] Bing describes the counts as citation activity, “not their importance, ranking, or role within a response.”[8]
How do you increase AI search visibility?
- Be eligible: indexed and snippet-eligible for Google; allowed for each engine’s search crawler.[2][6][7]
- Rank for the sub-questions engines search for. Google’s AI features use query fan-out, issuing related searches across subtopics.[2]
- Make passages self-contained and factual so they support an answer.
- Build brand corroboration off-site; see brand visibility.
Frequently asked questions
Can I filter Search Console to AI Overviews only?
The standard Performance report mixes AI features into Web totals. The Generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode specifically.
Does AI search visibility bring traffic?
Less than classic results, on average. Pew found clicks on links inside Google AI summaries in 1% of visits to pages with a summary (March 2025).
Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Google Search?
Google says nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex are the controls for limiting what is shown; robots.txt rules for Googlebot govern crawling for Search overall.
