AI Overview tracking

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

AI Overview tracking means measuring how often your pages appear and get clicked in Google AI Overviews (and AI Mode). The first-party source is Search Console: AI feature appearances are counted in the Web search type, and the Generative AI performance report, available to all sites as of August 31, 2026, breaks out AI Overview and AI Mode impressions. Third-party tools add competitor and brand-mention data.

How does Search Console count AI Overviews?

A click on an external link in an AI Overview counts as a click. An impression follows standard rules, and the link must be scrolled or expanded into view. All links in one Overview share a single position.[1] The Generative AI performance report shows impressions by page, country, device and date.[2] See Google Search Console.

What can third-party trackers add?

Search Console reports only your own URLs. Rank and AI trackers report which keywords trigger an Overview, which domains are cited, and competitor share: Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit covers Google AI Mode and AI Overviews among other engines,[3] SE Ranking’s AI Visibility Tracker covers AI Overviews and AI Mode,[4] and DataForSEO’s LLM Mentions API covers Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.[5] Features are as documented by the vendors.

What metrics should you track?

Why can traffic fall while visibility rises?

Pew found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without, and clicked a link inside the summary in 1% (March 2025 data).[6]

Frequently asked questions

Can I filter Search Console to AI Overviews only?

Use the Generative AI performance report, which separates AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions.

Are AI Mode clicks counted?

Yes. A click on an external link in AI Mode counts as a click in Search Console.

Do trackers see the same Overviews as users?

Not necessarily. Overviews vary by query, location and time, so trackers sample.
