Knowledge panel
A knowledge panel is the information box Google shows for entities (people, places, organizations, things) in its Knowledge Graph. Panels are generated automatically from sources across the web. You cannot buy or create one, but if you are the subject or an official representative you can claim it through Google’s verification flow and then suggest changes.
Where does knowledge panel information come from?
Google says panels are “automatically generated” from “various sources across the web,” sometimes combined with data partners for topics such as movies or music, and may include edits suggested by verified entities. Images can come from claimants or from Google Images results.[1] Panels draw on the Knowledge Graph, launched in 2012.[2]
How do you claim a knowledge panel?
- Sign in to a Google Account.
- Search for yourself or the entity you represent and find the panel.
- Click Claim this knowledge panel at the bottom (on mobile, via the menu).
- Review the information, then sign in to an official site or profile listed: YouTube, Search Console, Twitter or Facebook.
If Google cannot identify associated sites, it prompts for more information. Not all panels are claimable; Google advises checking periodically for the claim button.[3]
How do you update a knowledge panel?
After verification, use Feedback below the panel: flag the fact, describe the change and link pages that verify it. Verified users get priority review, and you can add managers or contributors. Non-representatives can still submit feedback.[3][1]
How do you get a knowledge panel?
Google does not document a process to request a new panel; panels appear for entities in the Knowledge Graph.[1] What you can control is consistent, verifiable information about the entity: Organization structured data on your home page can help Google disambiguate your organization and influence the logo in your panel.[4] See entities and the Knowledge Graph.
Is a knowledge panel the same as a Business Profile?
No. Business Profiles look similar but are for businesses serving customers at a location or in a service area, and are claimed through Google Business Profile.[1][3]
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay Google for a knowledge panel?
No. Panels are generated automatically; Google offers no paid placement.
Why can’t I see the claim button?
Not every panel is claimable yet; Google suggests checking back periodically and using Feedback meanwhile.
What if someone else already claimed my panel?
Google offers an account recovery process; if current managers don’t respond within 3 business days, the panel becomes claimable again.
