From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

Reddit SEO means getting your brand, product or expertise represented in Reddit discussions that rank in Google and appear in AI answers. Reddit is one of the most-cited sources in Google’s AI summaries, and both Google (February 2024) and OpenAI (May 2024) have data partnerships with Reddit. Reddit’s rules require authentic participation and prohibit spam and content manipulation.

Why does Reddit appear so often in AI answers?

Pew Research Center found that Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the most frequently cited sources in Google AI summaries in its March 2025 sample, together 15% of sources.[1] On February 22, 2024, Google said it now has access to Reddit’s Data API for “real-time, structured, unique content,” to display, train on and otherwise use it.[2] On May 16, 2024, OpenAI said it would use Reddit’s Data API to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT.[3]

What do Reddit’s rules allow brands to do?

Reddit’s platform rules ask users to “participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest,” not to spam or engage in “content manipulation,” and not to “impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner.” Each community also has its own rules.[4]

How can a brand participate legitimately?

What are the risks?

Fake accounts, vote manipulation or undisclosed promotion break Reddit’s rules and can lead to content removal or account suspension.[4] Google’s spam policies also cover spammy user-generated content.[5]

Frequently asked questions

Does Google rank Reddit higher because of the partnership?

Google says the partnership “does not change” its use of publicly available content for indexing, training or display; it gives structured API access.

Can I post my own content on Reddit?

Yes, within Reddit’s rules and each community’s self-promotion rules.
