AI citations

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

AI citations are the linked sources an AI answer engine shows to support its response. Engines retrieve pages, generate an answer, and attach links to the passages used. A citation sends potential traffic and signals trust; a mention without a link does not. Citations are earned by being retrievable, relevant and quotable on the sub-questions an engine searches.

How do AI engines pick citations?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode show links rooted in core Search ranking, possibly drawn from fan-out queries.[1][2] Retrieval-based engines generally cite the retrieved documents their answer uses.[3] See RAG.

How accurate are AI citations?

Liu et al. (2023) found 51.5% of generated sentences fully supported by citations, and 74.5% of citations supported their sentence.[4]

Citation or mention: what is the difference?

A mention names your brand; a citation links your page. See brand mentions vs citations.

How do you earn and track AI citations?
