Rank tracking
Rank tracking means checking, on a schedule, where your pages appear in search results for a chosen set of keywords, locations and devices. Rank trackers turn those positions into metrics such as a visibility score. It complements, but differs from, Google Search Console’s average position, which is based on real impressions.
How is rank tracking different from Search Console position?
| Rank tracker | Search Console | |
|---|---|---|
| Data | Sampled results for a keyword list you choose | First-party impressions from real searches |
| Competitors | Yes, on the same keywords | No, your site only |
| AI features | Depends on the tool | AI Overviews and AI Mode counted in Web search;[1] all links in one Overview share one position[2] |
How do rank trackers calculate visibility?
Semrush’s Position Tracking Visibility % is a CTR-weighted estimate: 100% means position 1 for every tracked keyword, 0% means no top-100 rankings.[3][4] Scores depend entirely on the keyword set, so they compare only like with like.
Is rank tracking still useful with AI answers?
Yes, as an input. Google’s AI features are “rooted in” its core ranking systems,[5] so classic rankings still matter. But rankings no longer equal clicks: Ahrefs found AI Overviews correlated with a 34.5% lower position-1 CTR (March 2025 vs March 2024 data).[6] Track AI visibility separately; see AI rank tracking.
Does rank tracking break Google’s rules?
Google’s spam policies list “scraping results for rank-checking purposes” without permission as machine-generated traffic that violates its policies and Terms of Service.[7] Search Console data avoids this issue for your own site.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I track rankings?
Daily or weekly for important keywords; rankings fluctuate, so trends matter more than single readings.
Why does my tracker disagree with Search Console?
Trackers sample one location and device at a time; Search Console averages over all real impressions.
What is a rank tracker?
Software that checks and records positions for a keyword list on a schedule.
