Digital PR

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

Digital PR is earning coverage, mentions and links on other websites (news, trade publications, blogs) through newsworthy stories, data and expert commentary. For AI visibility it matters because answer engines rely on what third parties say about you: a 75,000-brand study found branded web mentions correlated more strongly with AI Overview visibility than backlinks did.

Why does digital PR matter for AI visibility?

In Ahrefs’ May 2025 correlation study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had a Spearman correlation of 0.664 with AI Overview brand visibility, versus 0.218 for backlinks. Brands in the top quartile of web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions, versus 14 for the next quartile.[1] The study is correlational, not causal. See brand mentions vs citations.

What does digital PR include?

Google’s spam policies count as link spam: paying for links or posts with links, sending products in exchange for links, and “links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites.” Paid or sponsored links are acceptable when marked rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored".[2] Coverage earned editorially is not covered by these policies.

How do you measure digital PR?

Track unlinked and linked mentions, referral traffic, branded search demand, and brand mentions in AI answers with a fixed prompt set; see AI citation tracking and share of voice.

Frequently asked questions

Is digital PR the same as link building?

They overlap, but digital PR targets coverage and mentions; links are one outcome. Buying links for ranking violates Google’s spam policies.

Do unlinked mentions count?

For AI brand visibility, the Ahrefs study measured mentions regardless of links and found them the strongest correlate.

Are press release links bad?

Google lists optimized-anchor links in distributed press releases as link spam. Press releases themselves are not prohibited.
