Brand mentions vs citations

From Search Visibility Wiki · By the · Published · Last reviewed · How we research

A mention is your brand named in the text of an AI answer; a citation is a link to your page shown as a source. They are independent: a brand can be recommended without its site being cited, and a page can be cited while a competitor is the brand named. Track both.

How do tools define mentions and citations?

ToolMention metricCitation metric
Ahrefs Brand Radar“how often your brand name appears in AI answer text”“how often AI links to your pages or domains as a source”[1]
SE RankingBrand mentions (# and %)Linked mentions (# and %)[2]
SemrushMentionsCitations, cited pages[3]
Bing Webmaster Tools—Citations of your pages in Copilot and Bing AI summaries[4]

Why can you be cited but not mentioned?

Engines often use a page as evidence for a general statement without naming the publisher. Pew found Google AI summaries usually cited several sources (88% cited three or more).[5] Being one of several links is visibility, but weaker than being the named recommendation.

What drives mentions?

In Ahrefs’ May 2025 study, branded web mentions (0.664), branded anchors (0.527) and branded search volume (0.392) were the strongest correlates of AI Overview brand mentions.[6] Google warns against inauthentic mention-seeking.[7]

What drives citations?

Citations follow retrieval: be indexed, rank for the sub-queries, and have a passage that supports the statement. C-SEO Bench found context position strongly predicted citation order.[8]

Frequently asked questions

Which matters more, mentions or citations?

It depends on the goal: mentions drive brand consideration; citations can drive referral visits and show that your content is used as evidence.

Are unlinked mentions counted by AI tools?

Yes, most trackers count brand names in answer text whether or not a link appears.

Can a citation misrepresent me?

Yes. A 2023 audit found about a quarter of citations did not support the sentence they were attached to.
