How to measure search visibility
Measure search visibility on two layers. Classic search: Search Console impressions, plus a rank tracker’s visibility score and share of voice for a fixed keyword set. AI answers: Search Console’s Generative AI performance report, Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance, and a prompt tracker that counts mentions and citations across engines. Report trends, not single snapshots.
Which metrics should you track?
| Metric | Layer | Tool | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Google (classic + AI) | Search Console | GSC |
| AI feature impressions | AI Overviews, AI Mode | Search Console Generative AI report[1] | GSC |
| Visibility % | Classic | Rank tracker[2] | Visibility score |
| Share of voice | Both | Rank or AI tracker | Share of voice |
| Citations | AI | Bing AI Performance; AI trackers[3] | AI citation tracking |
| Mentions, sentiment | AI | AI trackers | AI visibility tools |
How do you set up a measurement program?
- Verify your site in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Choose a keyword set (classic) and a prompt set (AI) covering your topics and buyer stages; keep them stable.
- Pick competitors to benchmark.
- Record a baseline, then report monthly trends.
- Annotate changes (content, technical, PR) so you can relate them to movement.
What are the pitfalls?
- Mixing tools: each vendor’s prompts and sampling differ.[4][5]
- Small samples: answers vary between runs.[6]
- Equating visibility with traffic: AI summaries reduce clicks.[7]
- Trusting “internal metric” claims: Google says “no third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.”[8]
Frequently asked questions
What is the single best visibility metric?
None covers everything. Search Console impressions are the most reliable first-party number for Google; AI mention and citation rates fill the gap for other engines.
How often should I measure?
Most trackers sample daily or weekly; monthly reporting smooths noise.
Can I measure ChatGPT visibility for free?
Only manually and anecdotally. Systematic measurement needs repeated prompts, which tools automate.
