Brand visibility vs brand awareness
From Search Visibility Wiki · By the Search Visibility Wiki editorial team · Published · Last reviewed · How we research
Brand visibility is how often your brand appears in the places people look: search results, AI answers, social feeds. Brand awareness is how many people recognize or recall it. Visibility is an exposure measure you can track directly; awareness is an outcome measured through surveys and proxies such as branded search.
How do they differ?
| Visibility | Awareness | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Are we shown? | Do people know us? |
| Measures | Impressions, mentions, share of voice | Surveys, branded search |
| Tools | Search Console,[1] AI trackers | Branded queries filter[2] |
How does AI search change the link?
AI answers can name a brand without sending a click; Pew found clicks on links inside AI summaries in 1% of visits.[3] Mentions may build awareness even without traffic.
