Brand visibility
Brand visibility, in a search context, is how often people encounter your brand when they search: in classic results, in knowledge panels, and named in AI answers. It depends on the brand being a recognizable entity with consistent facts, and on being mentioned across the web, which a 2025 Ahrefs study found correlated more strongly with AI Overview brand visibility than backlinks did.
Why does brand visibility matter more in AI search?
AI answers often name brands without a click. Pew found users ended their browsing session on 26% of Google pages with an AI summary, compared with 16% of pages without one (March 2025).[1] If the answer names you, you still gain exposure; if it names a competitor, you lose it with no ranking signal to show why.
What are brand mentions and why do they matter?
A brand mention is any reference to the brand name on another page, linked or not. In Ahrefs’ study of 75,000 brands (May 2025), the strongest correlations with AI Overview brand mentions were all off-site: branded web mentions (0.664), branded anchors (0.527) and branded search volume (0.392); backlinks were weaker (0.218).[2] The same study found 26% of brands had zero AI Overview mentions.[2] Google cautions that “seeking inauthentic ‘mentions’ across the web isn’t as helpful as it might seem.”[3] See mentions vs citations.
What role do entities and the knowledge graph play?
Google introduced its Knowledge Graph on May 16, 2012, under the slogan “things, not strings.”[4] Google’s AI Mode announcement says it can tap “fresh, real-time sources like the Knowledge Graph.”[5] The Knowledge Graph Search API lets anyone look up entities; it uses schema.org types and JSON-LD.[6] Consistent names, descriptions and identifiers across your site, profiles and third-party references help systems connect mentions to the right entity. How do you measure brand visibility?
- Branded search demand: impressions and clicks for brand queries in Search Console.
- AI mentions: mention rate and share of voice on a prompt set, via tools like Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush, Peec AI or OtterlyAI.[7][8][9][10]
- Sentiment: several tools classify how answers describe you; Semrush’s toolkit analyzes “brand perception and sentiment compared to competitors.”[8]
Frequently asked questions
Do unlinked mentions help SEO?
Their effect on classic rankings is unclear, but in Ahrefs’ 2025 correlation study unlinked and linked branded mentions together were the factor most associated with AI Overview brand visibility.
How do I get into Google’s Knowledge Graph?
Google does not offer a submission form for most entities. Consistent, corroborated facts across authoritative sources, and accurate structured data on your own site, are the usual approach.
What is a knowledge panel?
The information box Google shows for entities in its Knowledge Graph. Its contents come from Google’s understanding of the entity, not directly from your site.
