Perplexity visibility
Perplexity is an AI answer engine that cites web sources in its responses. To appear, a site should allow PerplexityBot, which Perplexity says is “designed to surface and link websites in search results” and is “not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.” Visibility is measured with third-party prompt trackers.
Which Perplexity crawlers exist?
- PerplexityBot: search indexing; Perplexity recommends allowing it and its published IPs. Changes may take up to 24 hours.[1]
- Perplexity-User: fetches pages for user requests; because a user requested it, it “generally ignores robots.txt rules.”[1]
Perplexity documents firewall allow-rules for Cloudflare and AWS WAF combining user-agent and IP checks.[1]
What has research found about Perplexity?
- In the 2023 Stanford audit, perplexity.ai had the highest average citation recall (68.7%) of the four engines tested, with 72.7% citation precision.[2]
- The GEO paper’s Perplexity test (200 samples, sources uploaded as files) found Quotation Addition improved position-adjusted word count by 22% and Keyword Stuffing performed about 10% worse than baseline.[3]
How do you track Perplexity visibility?
Perplexity is covered by Semrush,[4] SE Ranking,[5] OtterlyAI,[6] Profound[7] and Ahrefs Brand Radar.[8] Track mentions and cited URLs over a stable prompt set.
Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity train on my content?
Perplexity says PerplexityBot is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
Can I block Perplexity-User?
Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt because a user initiated the fetch; firewall rules are the remaining control.
Why is my site cited in Perplexity but not Google AI Overviews?
They use different indexes, crawlers and models, so visibility in one does not predict the other.
